Pennsylvania Suffrage Pledge Form.

Pennsylvania Suffrage Pledge Form. [Harrisburg, Pa.: Pennsylvania Woman Suffrage Association, ND, but ca. 1915].

Pledge form: 4-5/8" x 3-1/4"; printed black on gold paper; union slug present; a little surface rumpling; near fine.

The head of the form reads: "THE WOMAN SUFFRAGE PARTY / OF THE / PENNSYLVANIA WOMAN SUFFRAGE ASSOCIATION/ Miss Hannah J. Patterson, Chairman STATE HEADQUARTERS / 201-205 Arcade Building, Harrisburg, Pa." There are blanks for a name, address and town with the statement, "believing that women as well as men should vote, hereby joins the Woman Suffrage Party, with the understanding that it requires no dues, is non-partisan in character, and that it does not interfere with my regular political affiliations." There are also blanks for the county, legislative district, date, ward, election district and township. From the 1915 referenda campaigns on, NAWSA and its affiliates used pledge forms to secure the names and addresses of woman suffrage supporters. Carrie Chapman Catt, as head of the Empire State Campaign, made particular mention of the pledge forms in her directive to local woman suffrage leaders. The Pennsylvania pledge form is more detailed than others we have handled which usually limit themselves to name and address.
