Early Photo.

[Keller, Hellen]. Photographer Unknown. Early Photo of Helen Keller. Boston: 1898.

3.875 x 5.37”; black and white; blindstamped “Copyright” on bottom left of image; mounted on 5 x 7.125” heavyweight card with printed “Notman Photo Co./ Boston and Cambridge” at bottom; pinholes at top and bottom, some soiling to card.

A rarely seen image of the teenaged Helen Keller, sitting at a desk and wearing a flowing white dress. With her hands she is “reading” a Braille book. The photo was likely taken while Keller was at The Cambridge School for Young Ladies at Cambridge, where she attended school from 1896-1900.

Handwritten notations at the bottom of the card identify the photo, “Helen Keller,” “Boston’s special care 1898”; the same words and “blind girl” are written on the verso. Laid-in to the verso is a 1904 newspaper article, along with two notations of the original owner’s name “Mrs, L. E. H. Culver/ Lakeview, Montana,” rubber stamped and “LEH Culver, May 18, 1898” handwritten on the verso.
