Louisa May Alcott: A Souvenir.

The First Biography Of Alcott

[Alcott, Louisa May]. Harlow, Laurel. Louisa May Alcott: A Souvenir. With Illustrations. Boston: Samuel E. Cassino, 1889.

4to.; text blocks of 3 x 4 inches printed in the center of pages 8 ½ x 10 ½ inches; Christmas gift tag affixed to first blank; light blue stiff wrappers, with “Louisa May Alcott” written in glitter-covered string affixed to cover; tied with blue ribbon; upper panel soiled. In a specially made cloth slipcase.

First edition of the first biography of Alcott, prepared in this strangely poignant “deluxe” format, likely for distribution to a small number of friends shortly after her death. The ribbon-tied wrappers were obviously prepared by hand, with “Louisa May Alcott” written in thin string carefully covered with gold glitter, glued to the cover. With illustrations of the text, and plates depicting scenes from Alcott’s life, throughout. BAL volume 1, 44. A very scarce book, especially given its quirky production values, in this superb condition.
