What Every Jewish Woman Should Know.
[Judaica]. Isaacs, Miriam. What Every Jewish Woman Should Know. A Guide for Jewish Women. In collaboration with Trude Weiss Rosmarin. New York: The Jewish Book Club, (1946).
12mo.; water-stains to bottom; pencil markings on “Contents” page; tan paper-covered boards, damp-stains front and back, light wear to edges.
First edition, fifth printing. This domestic handbook is a how-to on running a Jewish home, with information on the holidays and tips on observing them. Isaacs also advocates a particular sort of home—one infused “with the Jewish spirit” and run by an intelligent woman, defined by her as “a person who makes the most of her Jewishness, utilizing it as an instrument of accomplishment and inspiration in her own life, in the lives of the members of her family, and in the affairs of the community” (p. 26). So, along with recipes for gefilte fish and matzah ball soup, there is a list of suggestions for “The Intelligent Jewish Woman’s Jewish Book Shelf.” The woman Isaacs would like to mold combines leadership as a woman, vision as a Jew, and wisdom as both.
