Sandcastle, The.

Murdoch, Iris: THE SANDCASTLE. London: Chatto & Windus, 1957. First edition, first printing. INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY. Original cloth in dustwrapper. A lovely NEAR FINE clean, bright and tight copy in the VERY GOOD or better very lightly rubbed and dusty dustwrapper. Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author to Raymond Queneau “Que les temps ne vous fasse pas oublier MON AMItie / Iris Murdoch mai 1958”.

An outstanding association copy from the author to her great unrequited love.

Iris Murdoch corresponded with Raymond Queneau for thirty years, beginning in 1946. His influence on her work cannot be overstated; indeed, she writes in one of their many hundreds of letters "Anything I shall ever write will owe so much, so much, to you" and "As I think more about literature [...] I realise more and more how crucial for me is everything you write". Her first novel Under The Net is dedicated to him.
