"Eminent Opinions on Woman Suffrage" leaflet.
Leaflet: "Eminent Opinions on Woman Suffrage.” [NP; ND].
Leaflet: 6-1/8" x 6-7/8"; 4 pp.; printed on white stock; rumpled with one or two small edge tears; very good.
Leaflets and broadsides with selective quotes supporting woman suffrage appeared as early as 1893. This leaflet offers, as its title indicates, a series of statements on the subject of women and suffrage and/or their role in the political arena. Plato is followed by Abraham Lincoln. Others quoted: John Greenleaf Whittier, Florence Nightingale, John Stuart Mill, Harriet Beecher Stowe; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, George William Curtis, Lydia Maria Child, Mary A. Livermore, and Jane Addams. The quotes have been chosen to reflect well-known and respected figures in the area of literature, politics, religion and philosophy. "Eminent Opinions" is likely a slight variation of the NAWSA leaflet "Eminent People Declare for Equal Suffrage" noted by Franklin.
