Cather, Willa. The Professor’s House. New York: Knopf, 1925.
8vo.; discrete 1925 ownership signature; bright floral paper-covered boards; pale green cloth spine; bright pink spine label; publisher’s cardboard slipcase with label; spine lightly faded; virtually as new.
First edition, deluxe issue, 185 copies signed by Cather; there were 40 additional signed copies printed on Japan vellum: Crane A14.a.i. Cather’s psychologically complex novel about repression has been the subject of much discussion among postmodern feminist literary critics, who read the book against the background of the repression which marked and limited Cather’s life. The middle section, “Tom’s Outland Story,” represents the first instance of Cather setting a story in the American Southwest, a region she would explore in her last great work, Death Comes for the Archbishop.
