Their Eyes Were Watching God.

First English Edition Of Hurston’s Masterwork
In The Rare Dust-Jacket

Hurston, Zora Neale. Their Eyes Were Watching God: A Novel of Negro Life. London: J.M. Dent & Sons, (1938).

8vo.; brown cloth stamped in gilt; dust-jacket, photo of Hurston on both spine and front panel; jacket lightly chipped. In a specially made cloth slipcase.

First English edition of Hurston’s first book, comprised of sheets from the American edition with the title page cancel. Both the American edition, published in 1937 by Lippincott, and the English edition, were issued in very short press runs—most likely less than 1000 copies each. Hurston first editions are absent, even today, from many university libraries, and are similarly lacking from most “comprehensive” private collections of 20th-century fiction.

A lovely copy of an important book by one of America’s most fascinating and least appreciated female authors.
