Breaking Open.

Rukeyser, Muriel. Breaking Open. New York: Random House, (1973).

8vo, 135pp; white linen cloth with copper and blue metallic stamping; beige dust-jacket printed in black and purple; jacket rubbed at front panel and somewhat used overall. Very good in custom-made cloth clamshell box.

First edition. Inscribed by the poet on the half-title page, For Janet Flanner with my thanks for a letter you wrote to Lewis Mumford long ago—Muriel Rukeyser December 1973. Flanner, of course, is best known as Genêt who wrote the “Letter from Paris” for The New Yorker. And the letter Rukeyser refers to may well have had to do with the magazine for which all three wrote during their careers. Muriel Rukeyser’s last collection of poetry, which bridges World War II to the 1970s.
