Reading of Aircraft Drawings: Basic Training Guide.

[Labor]. U.S. Army Air Forces. Reading of Aircraft Drawings: Basic Training Guide. Training Order No. 30-1-1. Fairfield, OH: U.S. Army Air Forces, 1943.

8vo.; illustrated; embossed stamp on first leaf; printed cover; stapled and hole-punched; very lightly soiled.

A government-issued manual with black and white and color illustrations outlining the basics of understanding plans, cutaway views, and blueprints, for the new female workforce recruited from their homes to replace the fathers, brothers, and husbands who were off to war. With so much of the male working manpower in uniform, the aircraft industry in particular turned to hiring housewives for factory work. One such woman is depicted on the cover in overalls and visored cap reading a plan, and drawings throughout illustrate the following topics: “The Different Views of a Drawing,” “Dimensions,” “Notes,” “Lines,” “Symbols and Abbreviations,” “Title Blocks,” “Sectional Drawings,” “Exploded, Detail and Assembly Drawings,” “Care and Use of Prints,” and “Pictorial Sketching.” The manual is labeled “Restricted,” and this warning appears on the cover: “This document contains information affecting the National Defense of the United States within the meaning of the Espionage Act, 50 U.S.C., 31 and 32, as amended. Its transmission or the revelation of its contents in any manner to an unauthorized person is prohibited by law.”
