The Double Standard of Conduct for Men and Women. New York: Viola Mizell Kimmel

First edition. 12mo. 57pp. Stapled printed blue wrappers. Author's address stamp on last leaf, tiny bit of edgewear and small dogears at the top corner, else a nice, near fine copy.

A frank and uncommon treatment of sex education and sexual ethics, as well as equality for women, touching on controversial subjects: prostitution, unmarried sex, contraception, and abortion, as well as healthy sexual education in marriage. Kimmel also endorses both occasional nudity and dress reform. She also advises that readers obtain her other works – one about *The Truth of Sex*; the other about diet: *Right Eating: A Science and a Fine Art* – a raw food fasting system: "One of the chief causes of sexual slavery and sexual perversion is wrong eating and wrong drinking."

Given the sad contemporary end of Ida Craddock, who offered similarly frank mail order courses (she was persecuted by Comstock and committeed suicide in 1902) and Margaret Sanger's own arrest in 1916 for distribution of contraception information, the little-noticed Kimmel's frank advice on orgasm and intercourse, etc. seems remark
on orgasm and intercourse, etc. seeems remarkable. Not in *Atwater. OCLC* locates four copies.
