On this deceptively small card Anthony sketches the crime of the century perpetrated by herself with fifteen other women, when they cast their ballots in the 1872 presidential election. Arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to a fine—$100 never paid—this was a crucial moment in suffrage history. She writes:
The vote that Judge Hunt pronounced a crime against the United States was cast Nov. 5 1872 in the 8th Ward of Rochester N.Y. by Susan B. Anthony.
After Grant was elected, Ward Hunt (1810-86), then New York’s Commissioner of Appeals, was selected by President Grant to replace Samuel Nelson as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
The sentiment is accompanied by a black and white photograph of the stern suffragette, in black with black veil on her head, with white collar fastened with a cameo, her gaze fixated on a point in the distance to her right.
