Setting Copy

Carter, Violet Bonham. Winston Churchill: An Intimate Portrait. ND [1960-64].

795 typescript leaves; line edits in colored pencil and pen throughout; stamped pagination; edgewear and minor tears to top leaves; first page tape-mended on recto.

Carter’s final version of the text as submitted to her editor William Jovanovich. Winston Churchill: An Intimate Portrait, was published in 1965 by Harcourt, Brace & World after Carter restructured her original manuscript for wider appeal for an American readership. The lengthy typescript shows evidence of multiple rounds of edits: two editorial rounds and one authorial round in Bonham Carter’s own hand. Her corrections, in blue, add sentences, chapter titles, and note her structural preferences. For example, at the start of the first chapter, she writes: “Do not trim at ends as on sample pg.” The other rounds of edits, presumably by Jovanovich or another editor at Harcourt, Brace & World, include notations about grammar, spelling corrections, font, and other structural details.

Provenance: William Jovanovich; by descent to his family.
