First edition of Rombauer’s landmark work, together with a delicate hand-assembled compilation of recipes that predates The Joy of Cooking by three full years. The first edition of The Joy of Cooking was published in a minute edition at Rombauer’s own expense in her hometown of St. Louis; to date, it has been reprinted more often than any other English language cookbook.
Rombauer is now regarded as the foremother of the modern American domestic culinary tradition; as such, her works have claimed a unique place within 20th-century women’s social history.
