Hungry Hearts.

Yezierska, Anzia. Hungry Hearts. Illustrated with scenes from the photoplay. A Goldwyn Picture. New York: Grosset & Dunlap, (1920) [but published ca. 1922].

8vo.; illustrated; taupe cloth, stamped in black; few spots; illustrated dust-jacket, with a color front pictorial panel of the actress who starred in the film; light edgewear and lacking spine.

Photoplay edition of Yezierska’s first book, reprinted from the first edition; scarce. The sale of the film rights to this novel brought her instant, if short-lived, success, recognition, and security. The silent movie based on it, starring Rosa Rosanova and filmed on location on New York’s Lower East Side, was restored by the National Center for Jewish Film at Brandeis University. It has been called a “bittersweet classic [which] captures the hopes and hardships of Jewish immigrants in the New World.”
