LETTER: ALS to a friend.

SCARCE LETTER BY MAY ALCOTT

Alcott, May. Autograph letter signed, “May Alcott,” to Miss Prescott, June 8, 1874.
The second letter by May Alcott we have seen in trade in over twenty-five years – her
paintings appear more often than her correspondence. In this one May – Louisa May
Alcott’s youngest sister, who appears as “Amy Marsh” in Little Women – writes to a Miss
Prescott:

Dear Miss Prescott

Was’nt I promised a day in Concord from yourself & sister, & can’t that day be
this week or early next?

[p. 2] My portfolio is hardly arranged nor are my oils finished but the days go & I
find no time for painting so don’t wait but before you flit to Mtns or seashore [p.

3] take the 11:10 train from the Fitchburg Station & here there is a depot carriage
that will bring you to our door in time for our lunch at 1 o’ clock. We can have an
hour with Turner* & then I should enjoy showing you [p. 4] Concord, with its
winding river, old fashioned houses & interesting associations. How is Sunday, or

Sat of this week?

Yrs very truly

May Alcott

Concord, Mass
June 8th, ‘74

*Probably a reference to J. M. W. Turner, as May Alcott excelled at reproducing the
famed artist’s works.
