Inscribed By Corinne Roosevelt Robinson
[Roosevelt, Eleanor]. [Robinson, Corinne Roosevelt]. The Poems of Corinne Roosevelt Robinson. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1924.
Thick 8vo.; front inner hinge starting, some pages loose but not detached; black cloth, stamped in gilt on front cover. In a specially made cloth slipcase with two other Robinson titles.
First edition, first issue thus. A collection of three previous volumes by the author (The Call of Brotherhood; One Woman to Another; and Service and Sacrifice, Robinson’s first, second, and third books, respectively) with some new material added. A presentation copy, inscribed on the first blank: For Katharine Brodowska, in memory of pleasant evenings at Newport, from her sincere friend Corinne Roosevelt Robinson August 5th 1926. We have not been able to find Brodowska in any of the traditional reference sources, but she was clearly a good friend and frequent guest of Corinne Roosevelt Robinson whom she knew from Newport circles.
This lengthy anthology includes verses divided by subject (“Heroism;” “Love;” “Grief;” etc.) as well as an interesting section of “Verses Written for the Official Benefit for the Relief of Belgian Women and Children, December 8, 1914…” which includes tributes to Ellen Terry and Alla Nazimova among others.
