Uncle Tom's Cabin.

First Hebrew Edition

Stowe, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Translated into Yiddish by J. Jaffa. New York: Hebrew Publishing Company, 1911.

8vo.; illustrated; blue cloth, pictorially stamped in gilt; lightly rubbed, especially spine; head and heel lightly frayed. In a specially made cloth slipcase.

First Hebrew edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, translated into Yiddish by J. Jaffa and issued by the Hebrew Publishing Company. Important not just for American readers of the Jewish faith, most of whom, by the nineteen-teens, were able to read it in the original Russian, this Yiddish translation of Stowe’s incendiary classic in fact conceived as a way to smuggle the text into czarist Russia. One scholar reports that “Leo Tolstoy praised the work and it remained enormously popular also after the Revolution.”
