GORST (Barbara Jane). "Journal of a Tour through Part of Yorkshire in the Summer of 1818."
Contemporary stiff marbled wrappers. 8vo. pp. 40. Approximately 4,500 words. 1 September - 24 September 1818.
The diary of a young woman from a well-to-do Preston family traveling with her parents on a tour through Yorkshire where a number of her relatives live. Her reactions to the places visited are strictly in accordance with the aesthetic of the time. Of the drive to Bolton Abbey, she writes "it is impossible to describe the picturesque scenery with which we are surrounded on every side;" more than once she is "struck with wonder" at the countryside; and in front of Fountains Abbey she is "an astonished spectator." After Harrogate, where the party takes "a peep into the gay world", they travel onto York, Moulton, Scarborough and Castle Howard, then back home through Tadcaster and Leeds. In Elland they stay with Barbara's Aunt Veitch, "who was so kind as to send for the Band which played delightfully, we danced in the hall and were all highly entertained with our evening's amusement." In nice condition.
