Holy Land Under Mandate, The.

A Pre-Holocaust History Of The Holy Land
By An Early Jewish Female Historical Scholar

[Judaica]. Andrews, Fannie Fern. The Holy Land Under Mandate. With Illustrations... Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1931.

2 vols., 8vo.; frontispiece photographs (Vol. I, “The Surrender of Jerusalem, December 9, 1917”; Vol. II, “The Wailing Wall”); 15 other photographs throughout; pages bright; green cloth, stamped in gilt; spines lightly rubbed.

First edition. A two-volume history of what was then called Palestine, written by a Jewish woman scholar from Harvard University. This massive and detailed history carries Israel from British colonial times to the date of publication, 1931. The author, Fanny Fern Andrews, spent more than ten years writing the book. During this decade Andrews traveled widely throughout “the Holy Land”; these travels provide contribute to Andrews’s vivid eyewitness descriptions of day to day Israeli life. We have never before encountered a copy of Andrews work; it looks to be most uncommon.
