Valedictory Address…Female Medical College of Pennsylvania.
[Health issues]. Preston, Ann, M.D. Valedictory Address to the Graduating Class of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, for the Session of 1857-58. Philadelphia: Published by the Class, 1858.
8vo.; cream wrappers; stitching loose from possibly being bound at one time with other pamphlets; pages lightly used, last page a touch yellowed, else solid and sound.
First and only edition of this genuinely scarce publication commemorating the graduation of the seventh class at one of the first American medical schools established exclusively for women. The address was written and delivered by Ann Preston, an outspoken activist for the rights of women in the study and practice of medicine. Herself a member of the first class to graduate from the College, Preston was named a professor in 1853 and became dean in 1866. During a career marked by the struggle to achieve equal rights for women in her field, she founded the Women’s Hospital in Philadelphia in 1861 and in 1868 gained admittance for her students to the clinic of the Pennsylvania Hospital.
An eloquent exhortation to women to pursue their desire to contribute to the medical profession, and to continue the battle for legitimacy in a male-dominated establishment.
