Sozialreform oder Revolution?

RARE FIRST EDITION

Luxemburg, Rosa. Sozialreform oder Revolution? Mit einem Anhang: Miliz und Militarismus. Leipzig: G. Heinisch, 1899.

Small 8vo, pp. 80; a very good, clean copy in the original printed wrappers, browned; vertical crease where previously folded; preserved in a custom-made box.

Rare first edition of Rosa Luxemburg’s second published book; her first was her doctoral thesis, which had appeared as Die industrielle Entwicklung Polens in 1898.

‘From the time she settled in Berlin [in 1898] Rosa Luxemburg’s career was linked with the German socialist movement … From 1895 she wrote for Die Neue Zeit, the Leipziger Volkszeitung, and other German socialist organs. From 1898, when the world of German social democracy was dominated by the controversy over [Eduard] Bernstein’s views, Rosa Luxemburg’s writings and speeches were largely devoted to combating revisionism as advocated by Bernstein and other reformists. Her most important theoretical work of this period was Sozialreform oder Revolution? (Social Reform or Revolution?), containing the fullest expression of her disbelief in the possibility of reforming capitalism and her conviction that any struggle for economic reform must be of purely political significance’ (Kolakowski II, 62f).
