Woman Suffrage Serial No. 2: Hearings before the Committee of the Judiciary…

House of Representatives. "Woman Suffrage Serial No. 2 Hearings before the Committee on the Judiciary House of Representatives Sixty-Second Congress Second Session March 13, 1912.” Washington: Government Printing Office, 1912.

8vo; 104 pp.; wire-stitched self-wrappers; age-toning to front wrapper and a 2" closed tear across lower portion; "Alma Biele Leber" in pencil at upper margin; generally very good.

The hearing prints statements by Congressman Edward T. Taylor (see #39 below), Jane Addams, Leonora O’Reilly, Ida Husted Harper, and James L. Laidlow (among others). The speakers, drawn for New York, Illinois, Washington, DC., Colorado, Oregon, etc., represent diverse geographic regions of the United States. They present differing arguments, facts and statistics on behalf of woman suffrage and varying opinions on whether federal suffrage should be obtained through a federal amendment or by state by state referendums and constitutional conventions. The final portion of the hearing records anti-suffrage sentiments. One of the most substantial and informative hearings on the issue. Franklin, p. 169 (Three stars. Franklin cites a less complete publication [32 pp.] of the hearing).
