Jewish State, A] Evreiskoe gosudarstva.

Herzl, Theodor. Evreiskoe gosudarstva. Translated from German into Russian by V. Ben-Zev. Odessa: 1896.

8vo.; printed in Cyrillic; text signatures inserted into paper-covered boards with cloth spine; stained; title page covered with marking and stamps in several hands from several libraries; library stamp on first text page; pages foxed; hinges cracked; library label on cover; well worn.

First Russian edition. The horrors of the Russian pogroms of the late 19th century are acknowledged to be the driving impetus behind Herzl’s cry for a Jewish homeland and the eventual meetings which became the Zionist Congresses. The publication of this edition in the country where Jewish persecution was most prevalent at the time—and from which Herzl sought refuge in a Jewish State—is noteworthy.
