LETTER: Autograph letter signed to Dr. Laetitia Fairfield.

Goldman, Emma. Autograph letter, signed, “Emma Goldman,“ to “My Dear Dr. Fairfield,” [October 1924].

One 8 ½ x 11 leaf; written in blue noir ink on recto and verso; folded for mailing; creases darkened, not affecting text.

Written in October of 1924, shortly after her move to London, Goldman’s compassionate letter to Dr. Leititia Fairfield, the sister of Rebecca West, illustrates her sincere fondness and gratitude for their budding friendship:

"...Rebecca will have told you about the dinner. What she probably did not report to you is her own beautiful talk. She was splendid. I cannot tell you how very glad I am to have met with such a warm response in Rebecca and yourself. I do not feel quite so alone in England anymore. Thank you dear doctor. ... "

West became an ardent supporter of Goldman’s efforts to construct a campaign against Bolshevik tyranny in London; their political affiliation developed into a close friendship. Although political opinions later divided them, West adamantly upheld the view: “Emma Goldman is one of the great people of the world. She is a mountain of integrity.”

A touching, humanizing communication, linking Goldman to a towering English female writer of the period.
