[Anthologies]. Rayne, Mrs. M.L. What Can A Woman Do? Or, Her Position in the Business and Literary World. Illustrated. Petersburgh, N.Y.: Eagle Publishing Co., (1893).
Thick 8vo.; frontispiece; other illustrations throughout; illustrated endpapers; burgundy cloth, elaborately stamped in black, gilt, and blind; edges marbled; covers lightly used.
First, and only, edition. The text of nearly 600 pages is divided into two parts: the first half is an employment guide for women; the second half is a literary compilation, printing extracts from the work of various female authors along with brief biographies. The book includes several interesting essays, apparently commissioned specifically for this collection; prose contributors include Lydia Maria Child, whose observations about “Unmarried Women” are printed on pages 416-430.
