Harper writes:
I sent to the P.O. at one o'clock today, Sunday, and got your letter enclosing the check. I don't know where it had been since 8 A.M. Saturday, when it was postmarked. I finally succeeded in getting the valise at 4.30 this afternoon. I can excuse you from calling Mr. Gilbert bad names but you might have hit James with a club. [Para] I am very grateful to you for your trouble, and wish to thank you again for a very pleasant day. I understand Mrs. and Miss Clark are home safe. / Very truly yours, / Ida H. Harper.
Though it is unclear whether the occasion for this letter was personal or professional (or both), the letter suggests the directness and liveliness which recommended Harper to Susan B. Anthony.
