Music was an important aspect of all suffrage occasions. Suffragists adopted Julia Ward Howe’s "Battle Hymn of the Republic" as their unofficial anthem. Well-known patriotic songs such as "America" were given suffrage lyrics and sung at suffrage meetings, conventions, parades and rallies. Here "America" becomes "My country ‘tis for thee, /To make your women free, / This is our plea…"
