Votes for Women.

[Suffrage]. [Robins, Elizabeth and Franklin H. Wentworth]. Leaflet: “Votes for Women.” [N.P. but Boston], [N.D. but c. 1910].

Leaflet - small 4to, 5-3/4 x 9,” on glossy off-white stock printed on three sides, fourth side blank; overall wear with some creasing and short edge-tears—about very good.

A leaflet advertising “Votes for Women,” a program featuring speaker Franklin H. Wentworth delivering his address “Woman’s Portion” and Marion Craig Wentworth reading Act II of Elizabeth Robins' play “Votes for Women.” A small half-tone photograph of Franklin Wentworth is reproduced at the first page and a larger photograph of Marion Craig Wentworth appears at the third page. The program is to be given Sunday, April 4th at Ford Hall in Boston. Wentworth gave this same address in New York at Carnegie Hall February 27, 1910 “under the auspices of the women of the Socialist Party.” Elizabeth Robins (1862-1952), actress, producer, playwright, novelist and feminist, performed in England and the United States and built much of her career around her portrayal of Ibsen’s women. Robins appears to have been in sympathy with the playwright’s challenges to received ideas about womanhood. She was an active supporter of women’s rights and women’s suffrage, writing this play and the novel The Convert (1907) as well as at least two magazine articles which Franklin cites in her suffrage bibliography. The Feminist Companion describes Votes For Women! as Robins' most famous play which especially thrilled audiences with its scenes of suffrage rallies. The leaflet also provides details of the 'Musical Program' - an invariable part of suffrage evenings, meetings, rallies, etc. An attractive piece of suffrage ephemera. The Feminist Companion, pp. 913-914. See Franklin, p. 106 and Krichmar 1201 (Wentworth). Timelines Of American Women’s History, p. 343.
