PHOTOGRAPH: Portrait Photograph of Jackie Bouvier.

Press Photo documenting
Jackie O. Highlights

(Kennedy, Jacqueline Bouvier.) Phyfe, Hal. Portrait Photograph. From the files of the New York Times. 1947.

8 x 10 black and white photograph; red grease pencil to recto; numerous stamps, annotations, and two newsprint captions, on verso.

A portrait photo of the future first lady, taken by Hal Phyfe and sent out over a dozen times between 1947 and 1994. In the center of the verso is a stamp:

980 Madison Avenue

The phone number is partially obscured by a heavy pencil notation, “Bouvier / 1 col x 4” 3 ½ “

Above the stamp is, in pencil, “Miss Jacqueline Lee Bouvier,” and around it and filling the page are red and blue ink stamps offering dates and, in five instances, additional publication details. The earliest date, June 24, 1947, maps to Jackie’s entrance into society as “debutante of the year.” Other milestones for which this appeared in the Times include her 1953 engagement and marriage to JFK, the birth of JFK Jr. in November 1960, and, of course, her death in 1994. Other publications occurred in 1952, 1954, and 1989.
