MUSIC: Equal Suffrage Song Sheaf.

Rayé-Smith, Eugénie M. Pamphlet: "Equal Suffrage…Song Sheaf….” New York City: Eugénie M. Rayé-Smith, 1912.

Pamphlet: 5 x 6-7/8"; 20 pp.; pale orange wrappers printed black; neat ink notation at upper margin front cover; some fading; very good.

Second edition. Rayé-Smith prints 25 suffrage songs, presumably all written by her, set to popular songs such as "Suwanee River’ [sic],” "John Brown’s Body," "Bring Back My Bonnie," and "Oh, Susannah.” "‘Votes for Women,’ Sure to Win," for instance, sung to the tune of "Yankee Doodle…" begins, "It happened once in England fair / That woman’s mind got started / On thinking suffrage rights her share, / From her unjustly parted." Though such songs have faded from view, they were important to the movement and a vivid expression of the sentiments of those striving for equal rights.
