History of Woman Suffrage, The…Vol. IV.

Anthony, Susan B. and Ida Husted Harper, editors. The History of Woman Suffrage. Illustrated with Copperplate and Photogravure Engravings...Volume IV. 1883-1900. Rochester, New York: Susan B. Anthony, (1902).

Thick 8vo.; frontispiece portrait of Anthony; other illustrations throughout; some pages lightly browned, foxed; inner hinge tender; red cloth, stamped in gilt; a well-read copy, covers used; small chip to upper right corner of spine. In a specially made quarter-morocco slipcase.

First edition of the fourth volume in Anthony’s landmark history of the suffrage movement; lacking the other volumes. A presentation copy, inscribed: Hon. Joseph & Abby Barker Sheldon. New Haven, CT. This in memory of your early service to the cause of woman suffrage—and of your continued work through your daughter—and also for your very selves—I am, Sincerely yours, Susan B. Anthony, 17 Madison Street, Rochester, N.Y., June 12, 1903. A poignant association copy of Anthony’s most lasting work, inscribed by her in honor of an entire family of suffrage supporters. Mr. and Mrs. Abby Barker Sheldon were early financial backers of the movement for equal rights for women; their daughter, Ellen H. Sheldon, became an officer in Anthony’s National Woman Suffrage Association, serving alongside Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Ellen H. Sheldon is mentioned on pages 27 and 127 of this volume, which is, no doubt, why Anthony chose to inscribe this particular piece of the set as a gift to the elder Sheldons. Anthony died in 1906, only three years after this late inscription.
