Giant Night.
Waldman, Anne. Giant Night. Poems. New York: Corinth Books, 1970.
8vo.; purple cloth, spine stamped in white; purple and white dust-jacket, trace of fading to the spine and one negligible chip.
First edition of Waldman’s first trade publication; preceded by a pamphlet—O My Life!—published the previous year by Angel Hair Press, Waldman’s own imprint under which she also edited and issued Angel Hair magazine. One of 50 numbered copies signed by Waldman, bound in cloth; another 950 were issued in cloth and 7000 were bound in wrappers; the entire edition.
A Bennington graduate, Waldman functioned as a poetry impresario on the Lower East Side in the 1970s and 80s, in the influential Poetry Project and the long-standing reading series at St. Mark’s Church. She has entered the history of the Beat movement as the youngest female member of a community in which females had, at best, a minor role.
Corinth Books was the imprint of the 8th Street Bookstore. The dust-jacket was designed by the increasingly admired college artist Joe Brainard; the photograph of Waldman on the jacket was taken by Gerard Malanga, who created a vast amount of photographic documentation of Andy Warhol’s Factory.
