Vale of Cedars and Other Tales.

A Memorial Aguilar Volume,
Presented By The Synagogue Industrial School

Aguilar, Grace. The Vale of Cedars & Other Tales...With an Introduction by Walter Jerrold. Illustrated by T.H. Robinson. London, Philadelphia: J.M. Dent & Co. …, The Jewish Publication Society, 1892.

8vo.; printed endpapers, memorializing Aguilar, lightly darkened; few closed tears; multicolored frontispiece; full-color illustrations throughout; pages lightly browned; hinges tender; brown, green and tan cloth stamped with elaborate illustration of Jewish wise man and young girl; covers lightly used, rear panel slightly soiled.

A posthumous reprint of this collection of Aguilar’s fiction; first edition thus, with an introduction by Walter Jerrold and illustrations by T.H. Robinson. A joint production between J.M. Dent and the Philadelphia-based Jewish Publication Society, first published posthumously in London as The Vale of Cedars; or The Martyr in 1850. A presentation copy, inscribed in an unknown hand: “Presented by the Synagogue Industrial School for Good Work May 1911.”

The Vale of Cedars & Other Tales consists of ten fictions: nine short stories—“The Perez Family,” “Amete and Yafeh,” “The Fugitive,” “The Edict,” “The Escape,” “Helon,” “The Spirit’s Entreaty,” “The Spirit of Night” and “The Triumph of Love.” A warm tribute to “the first woman who stood forth as public advocate of the faith of Israel” (introduction, iii), and certainly a fitting gift for a benefactor or benefactress of the Synagogue Industrial School.
