Helaine Blum Archive
(1920-2010)
An archive comprised of Helaine Blum’s correspondences with family and friends – tracking Blum’s relationships and many residences over the decades – as well as documents pertaining to her career as a painter and sculptor.
Blum (1909-2010) was an American sculptor who resided in New York City for the greater part of her career. Artists Max Weber and William Zorach are acknowledged with discovering and mentoring Blum through the primary stages of her career. Blum’s close working relationship with each artist, as well as many of her subjects, can be seen through the correspondences and documents compiled in this archive.
• Max Weber: Nine books written by or pertaining to MW, inscribed to HB ;correspondence, bulking to the 1950s; invitations to MW exhibitions; issues of Time Magazine and Art Digest, each with mention of MW; framed note, handwritten and signed by Max Weber: You must work/Max; printed ephemera.
• Einstein, William Zorach, and Marcell Marceau: Correspondence with William Zorach; exhibition and invitations for WZ shows; three books by or pertaining to William Zorach, inscribed to HB; 5x7 portrait of Einstein, inscribed to Helaine by Einstein; Correspondence with Otto Nathan (Einstein’s best friend), 36 8x10, black and white silver gelatin prints of Marcell Marceau; programs to MM Shows; printed ephemera.
• Family Correspondence: over 200 letters from Solomon and Clara Blum (parents); More than 100 letters from the Levy Family (Rodger, Paulette, Janine, Jean Pierre); couple dozen letters between Miriam (sister) and Pauline Levy, letters from Christine Sample (mother’s caretaker).
• Personal Correspondence: Over 200 love letters from Angus Rouland, many including photos; over 100 letters from Stephen Kayser; letters from Walter Starkie and Mrs. Walter Starkie.
• Personal Papers: Correspondence with Museums and Art Institutes; Newpaper clippings pertaining to HB’s career; legal documents pertaining to HB’s trust; legal documents of Clara and Solomon; HB financial documents; personal items, including phone books, notes and identification documents; printed ephemera.
• Photographs: over 30 photos of HB’s sculptures; 3 scrapbooks, 2 are annotated; family photos ranging from 1920’s-1980’s; framed portraits.
