Women of New York.

Hankins, Marie Louise. Women of New York. Illustrated. New York: Hankins Co., 1861.

8vo.; illustrations on green paper; unobtrusive foxing throughout; green cloth, stamped in blind and gilt; front and rear covers lightly soiled and worn; extremities rubbed; spine frayed; still a pretty copy.

First edition of Hankins’s humorous chronicle of New York women in the mid-19th century. Her gallery consists of factual anecdotes and illustrations that range broadly across the class spectrum to include both famous and relatively unknown women, such as Ruth Martin: The Spiritual Medium; Maggie Brewer: The Milliner’s Girl; Lizzie Blair: The Little Hunchback; and Aunty Green: The Old Peddlar Woman.

Although little biographical information exists, Hankins’s most notable achievement was her position as editor of the Family Newspaper; she was also the author of six books including: Human Life; The Old Woman’s Revenge; Bigamy; The Bankrupt’s Wife; Too Late; and The Needle Women.
