Ambitious Woman in Business, The.

How To Succeed In Business As A Woman

Gilbert, Eleanor. The Ambitious Woman in Business. New York: Funk & Wagnalls Company, 1916.

8vo.; photographic frontispiece of “[Female] Schoolroom in a Large Corporation;” three folding tables bound in; 11 page bibliography and an index; green cloth, stamped in gilt; previous owner’s inscription on first blank; fine.

First edition of this manual for the ambitious woman and her allies, comprised of 27 chapters, including: “Why Women Are In Business”; “How To Market Your Ability”; “Habits That Help The Businesswoman”; “Home and Marriage and The Businesswoman”; “Advertising And The Woman Who Can Write”; “Woman’s Character And Personality In Business”; “The Business Woman’s Finances”; and many others.

Today, this would be considered a self-help book, filed perhaps in the career section; at the time it was written, however, this was a radical text, as it advocated (and even enabled) women working outside the home.
