Men in Dark Times. Corrected Galleys.

Arendt’s Annotated Galleys

Arendt, Hannah. Men in Dark Times. New York: Harcourt, Brace and World, Inc., (1968).

Folio; long galleys; annotated in pencil, red ink, and black marker.

Annotated long galleys of this anthology showcasing Arendt’s adept portraits of some of the most enigmatic figures of the 20th-century, including Pope John Paul XXIII, Karl Jaspers, Isak Dinesen, Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht and Randall Jarrell, among others.

“Marked set,” as docketed on the half-title, copyedited throughout with occasional corrections and minor emendations in red ink, with her pencil to nearly every page, and occasional emendations in red ink. Among the more substantive changes are occasional word changes (“extremely” to “particularly” – p. 12; present tense to past tense – p. 12; “that existed” to “of the past” - p. 13; “discussed” to “talked about” – p. 16; “epistemological” to “cognitive” – p. 18; “private world” to “world of their own” on p. 53 – for example). The copy editor who sprinkled red marks throughout occasionally directed questions to Arendt, which she answered in pencil. On page 37 several dropped lines are added in type and on page 39 several lines are added in pencil. Pages 115 and 147/171 see the lengthiest adjustments: on 115 Arendt has crossed out three lines and added in pencil four substitute lines at the foot of the page, clarifying an allusion to the Illiad; on 147 and 171 she has typed in lengthy notes about Brecht and Stalin.
