The fragment reads in full:

[ ]. My love to you and to your friends. My friend Lorna has visited me from Christmas until the 5th of this month and then she went away. She is very much afflicted & lame & cannot walk with her feet. She has injured her [ ] very badly years ago. She is ill & perfectly blind. She is very kind & patient & affectionate [] to every one in this world [ ].

Bridgman (1829–89) was the first blind and deaf person to be successfully educated. Under the guidance of Dr. S. G. Howe, of the Perkins School for the Blind, she learned to read and write and to sew, eventually becoming a sewing teacher at the school, where she remained until her death. As a girl and young woman, Bridgman was famous, her life and education described in newspapers and magazines worldwide. Her fame was later eclipsed by that of Helen Keller.
