My Days.

Roosevelt, Eleanor. My Days: From June 1st 1936 to December 31st, 1936. (New York: United Feature Syndicate, Inc., 1936).

Folio; approximately 275 mimeographed leaves, printed on rectos only; bound in black leatherette, stamped in gilt on spine.

Eleanor Roosevelt began writing her nationally syndicated column “My Day” in January of 1936. This bound collection of rare United Feature Syndicate press releases, each one two pages in length, covers FDR’s second presidential campaign, far and away the dominant subject discussed in these pieces. This is the first example of any prepublication ER newspaper material we have encountered; the provenance of our collection–the de-accessioned Library of Congress duplicate copy with a release stamp dated April 1, 1942 on the front pastedown–only underscores the scarcity of this item.

When a 1938 collection of “My Day” columns was published in 1938, only parts of Eleanor’s columns were reprinted; no dates of composition were supplied, and the texts differed from their original state. A later edition of the collection adds more text, but still lacks much of what is contained in this unpublished volume.
