Original photograph of women gathered in a courtyard carrying American flags. The parade coincided with the passage, the same day, of the National Defense Act. This act and the naval appropriation act of August 29, 1916, prepared the country for its entry into WWI, especially for the mandatory draft that followed. Over 130,000 people marched in Chicago. Generally boycotted by the workers of Chicago the parade highlighted the growing US militarization before WWI. Many saw the parade as a front for TR's presidential candidacy.
