First edition. A foundational presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper: To Miss Wald— “comps of the author” Jane Addams. Signed in pencil beneath by the daughter of a relation of Wald: “Kate Bier Box 454 Carmel.” Lillian Wald’s Henry Street Settlement was the direct lineal descendent of Addams’s Hull House. Wald would go on to write the introduction to the final revision of Twenty Years at Hull-House prepared during Addams’s lifetime.
