LETTER: Autograph letter signed, Henry B. Blackwell” to “Mrs. [Sara] Underwood,
(Underwood, Sara) Blackwell, Henry B. Autograph letter signed, “Henry B. Blackwell” to “Mrs. [Sara] Underwood,” Boston, June 12, 1889; one lined leaf “The Woman’s Journal” letterhead; 5 ¾ x 9 ¾ inches; recto only; creased where folded; ink with several pencil markings.
Blackwell writes to suffragette and writer Sara Underwood about a delay in response regarding a poetry submission to The Woman’s Journal, the feminist periodical Blackwell published with his wife Lucy Stone. Blackwell explains, “Our literary editor, A.S.B. [his daughter Alice Stone Blackwell] is off…on a little tour of Suffrage meetings. She will attend to Mrs. Tuttle’s poem as soon as possible. It has not been from intentional neglect but from overwork if she has not done so sooner.” He goes on, writing familiarly, “Boston is all right, but the Free Religious Association misses you + Mr. Underwood. I hope you are both prospering in your new sphere of usefulness.” Blackwell ends with a post-script: “My wife desires to be kindly remembered.”
Sara and Benjamin Underwood were active supporters of women’s rights, both writing, editing, and speaking on suffrage around the United States. In Boston the couple co-edited the suffrage periodical the Index, which was published at the same time as Blackwell’s Woman’s Journal, and with whom they corresponded and worked closely.
