Joy of Cooking, The.

FIRST EDITION, PRIVATELY PRINTED
IN THE SCARCE DUST-JACKET

[Cookbooks] Rombauer, Irma. The Joy of Cooking. A compilation of reliable recipes with a
casual culinary chat. St. Louis: Printed by A.C Clayton Printing Co., 1931.

8vo.; contemporary ownership signature on front endpaper; silhouettes by Marion Rombauer at
the beginning of each chapter; blue cloth, stamped in gilt; pictorial dust-jacket.

First edition. Self-published by Rombauer in 1931, The Joy of Cooking quickly became one of the
most popular cookbooks of all time, and remains one of the most important, authoritative
American cookbooks of the twentieth century. Due to its popularity and use, it is rare in good
condition, despite the printed reminder on the rear pastedown: “The cover of this book may be
cleaned with a moist cloth.”

Rare in this condition; almost unheard of in the pictorial dust-jacket featuring Saint Martha of
Bethany battling the Tarasque monster.
