Echoes from the Temple.
[Judaica]. Davis, Edith Ella. Echoes from the Temple. New York: Bloch Publishing Company, 1926.
8vo.; some staining to top corners; blue cloth, some wear to top.
First edition of a collection of poetry published by noted Jewish publisher and reformer, Charles Edward Bloch, whose company rightly proclaims itself “The Jewish Book Concern” on the title page. As her title suggests, Davis takes Judaism as the subject of her verse, drawing inspiration from the temple. In addition to some meditations on more spiritual matters, the collection contains a few sketches of the objects and figures found in synagogues—the cantor, the holy lights, the prayer shawl, etc. The prayer service itself provides a literary model; a number of poems resemble liturgical hymns. However, a brief glossary in the rear, labeled “Explanatory Notes,” indicates that Davis was eager to make these poems accessible to all.
