Second Hebrew edition, unrecorded. Translated by the Galicia-born author and scholar Michael Berkowitz (1865-1935), who was Herzl’s collaborator as well as secretary of Hebrew and Yiddish during the 1890s. Berkowicz was well established in Hebrew and Yiddish literary and editorial circles as the editor of both Die Welt and Der Yud, and was associated with Hatzefirah and Hamaggid. He translated Herzl’s complete works into Hebrew between 1921 and 1924 (Kol Kirve Theodor Herzl). Herzl must have experienced the greatest pride in seeing this work published in the language of his people, the language reborn in the creation of his Jewish State (Universal Jewish Encyclopedia 2, p. 204).
