Roosevelt Family Genealogy, 1649-1902.

[Roosevelt, Eleanor]. The Roosevelt Genealogy. 1649-1902. Compiled and published by C.B. Whittelsey. Hartford: J.R.Burr & Co., 1902.

8vo., red cloth; covers stained; spine frayed and chipped; tight and sound.

First edition of this scarce, privately printed genealogy of the Roosevelts; tracks various branches of the large clan from the arrival of Claes Martenszen van Rosenvelt in New Netherland in 1649 to the onset of the 20th-century. A choice family relic, inscribed by Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, Teddy Roosevelt’s youngest sister, to her niece Eleanor: “Eleanor Roosevelt from her aunt Corinne Roosevelt Robinson Xmas 1902. With two autograph notes by FDR: on p. 12 he notes next to the record of Johannes Hardenbroeck, “J.H. a merchant in N.Y. in 1771 (Rec. of N. [ ] Vol. XI, 337)”; on p. 44 under entry 208: “Known at Hyde Park as “Handsome Jim.”“

Eleanor is listed as Elliott’s daughter on p. 96; FDR’s lineage is detailed on pp. 79-80. Eleven months after receipt of this gift, Eleanor became formally engaged to FDR. The presence of his notes suggests that he used the text as a research aid, perhaps in his application to the Order of Washington in 1914. The Genealogy now remains an invaluable tool in understanding the familial relationships among a clan prone to appropriating for their progeny the names of their ancestors.
