One Writer's Beginnings.

Welty, Eudora. One Writer’s Beginnings. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1984.

8vo.; grey cloth; stamped in gilt; pink and white dust-jacket; imperceptibly faded on the spine.

First edition of this trio of lectures Welty delivered at Harvard in 1983. Invited to speak by the historian David Herbert Donald, it was Donald’s wife Aida, the Director of the Harvard University Press, who persuaded the perpetually-shy Welty to permit these lectures to be published. To the amazement of all involved, Beginnings became the most successful book Welty ever published, remaining on the New York Times bestseller list for over five months.

A presentation copy, inscribed on the title page to the English novelist Angela Carter, whom Welty met on one of her many trips to London in the 70’s and 80’s: For Angela / Eudora Welty. Predictably, the first printing was modest, and inscribed copies are uncommon.
