[Judaica]. Reports of the Jewish Philanthropic Societies of New York. The Young Men’s and Women’s Division of Federation Report. May 11, 1933- September 12, 1934; Second Report, September 13, 1934-May 28, 1935. New York: Young Men’s and Women’s Division, submitted by Irving Berkelhammer, 1933-1935.
2 vols., slim 4to.; blue and green cloth, respectively, stamped in gilt; spines sunned.
Scrapbooks prepared by Irving Berkelhammer, the President of the Young Men’s and Women’s Division of Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies of New York City, with two of his reports and related material. Berkelhammer submitted the reports to the Honorable Paul Felix Warburg, Liaison Officer; his letters of acknowledgement to Berkelhammer are affixed to the front endpapers.
These informal “Reports” are, in fact, specially bound compilations of letters, clippings, periodicals and other publications tracking the Society’s success over the course of two years: May 1933 to September 1934, and September through May 1935. The first assemblage opens with an explanatory letter to Warburg:
I have the honor to submit the annexed report of the activities of the Yong Men’s and Women’s Division of Federation, beginning with the time when you so graciously consented to act as liaison officer, between our organization and the Board of Trustees’ of Federation, that is, May 11, 1933, to date.
The report is accompanied by an appendix which contains copies of printed data distributed in the community for the purpose of furthering our projects…
The report, an eight-page signed typescript, is preceded by an introduction and divided into several “fronts”: volunteer service, money-raising, education and special projects, general administration. Berkelhammer’s brief conclusion is followed by an appendix listing the additional materials bound in: Mass lesson in philanthropy program, souvenir program from the Junior Federation’s “Tropical Summer Dance,” a mini-brochure about “the story of Junior Federation,” typescript copy instructions for the Industrial Division, typescript copy of their Constitution, a questionnaire, and four issues of their news review.
The second report is prefaced by not only the letter of acknowledgement from Warburg, but by a letter from Director Joseph Willen and a thank-you from Warburg for another service, as well. The second report—three pages longer than the first—is broken down in much the same manner, with an additional appendix containing schedules of institutions served by various committees and a financial statement. The second appendix is comprised of programs, pamphlets and newsletters like those found in the first report; several items have come unglued and have been loosely inserted.
