An intimate letter to a close friend extending sympathies and imparting important family news of her sons, reporting from World War II. In full:

August 28th

Dearest Livy,

Tommy [Malvina Thompson, her personal secretary, travel companion and friend] & I came down here today so I could see the children before they left for school.

I am so sorry about your partner but I know Hershey is glad to have you with him. I hope you’ve found an apartment because I know it is hard living with other people, even when they are your sisters & your brothers.

[p. 2] We had a [ ] heat but lately it has been cold & I love it. I’m only sorry because it means the summer is coming to an end & I love being free out of Washington!

We spent a day with Earl [Miller] & Simone & Skippy & had a wonderful time. They have the pool filled so Earl enjoyed his ten days –

Anna [Roosevelt]’s children are here but I still have some children at Hyde Park. After Labor Day I’ll move to the cottage & stay there thro’ September then close it & come here, going to the big house if we go up [p. 3] during the autumn & winter –

I have interesting letters from Johnny [Roosevelt] who has been in the thick of the Pacific fighting – Elliott [Roosevelt] too writes he’s been in France daily & thinks Germany must surrender soon.

A world of love to you dear,

Devotedly,

E.R.

Good luck to you & Hershey
